As You Get Ready to See the Show
- Read Hans Christian Andersen's story, The Ugly Duckling...and several other versions as well. Notice how the same story can be told many ways. HONK! will be yet another.
- Who is Hans Christian Andersen?
- Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) is mainly known for the fairy tales he produced combining folk legends and his own imagination. Anderson's fairy tales were not meant merely for children but for adults as well. He has also written plays, novels and travelogues. His identification with the unfortunate and outcast made his tales very compelling.

- What are fairy tales?
- Fairytale Lessons: Many fairytales teach a lesson in the story. What is the lesson in HONK JR! Write your own fairytale that teaches an important lesson.
- Learn about characteristics of animals.
- What are Cygnets? Cygnets are baby swans. They are gray and brown.
- What are baby ducks called? Ducklings What do they look like?
- Search for pictures of baby swans & baby ducks.
- What do different types of eggs look like?
- What are characteristics of ducks? What are characteristics of swans? What do ducks and swans have in common? How are they different?
Things to Talk About
- What does it feel like to be different than everybody else? Do you ever feel that way? Do you think we are all more alike than we are different? What are some of the ways that might be true?
- The ugly duckling doesn't really turn into a swan does he? Ugly is a swan from the moment he is born...he just doesn't know it right away. What would make you feel like a swan? An idea: Draw it.
