Recently, Archbishop Brunette invited Joe Sifferman to begin training to become a permanent deacon. Joe and Mary were one of thirty-four couples chosen from more than 150 applicants to the Deacon Formation Program. In the first 2 years of the program, ten men left leaving Joe and 23 other participants. Joe has always enjoyed church life and the liturgy and becoming a deacon seemed like a logical next step. When he becomes a deacon he would like to be a hospital chaplain and to also serve here at Christ the King/Cristo Rey Parish. Mary was involved in the interview and acceptance process and was a voice of encouragement.
Joe and Mary’s outreach to the community is varied. They have been longtime Eucharistic Ministers at Christ the King and are heavily involved in St. Vincent de Paul, a ministry to the poor. Through Roosevelt Vision Source, they continue to be sponsors of our school auction and have ran the Fall Fest pizza booth for years. Joe and his daughter have donated their time to give eye exams to our students and Joe has given 15 years of service on the Parish Finance Council and 6 years of service on the Pastoral Council. We are grateful for their dedication to CKP and to the greater community.
